Under the Clean Water Act, Indian Tribes may establish their own water quality standards (WQS). WQS defines the water quality goals of a water body by designating the uses and setting criteria necessary to protect the uses for all waters within the jurisdictions.WQS are used to protect the public health and welfare, enhance the quality of water, and attaint the goals of the Clean Water Act.
